Selvage or Selvedge comes from the phrase “self-edge” or the natural edge of a roll of fabric.  Selvedge denim can only be woven on shuttle-looms, which are rare because they are the vintage machines that Levi’s sold to the Japanese when they upgraded to modern, high-capacity looms.  The Japanese have continued the artisanal methods using these vintage looms that produce better quality,  more expensive denim.  These looms weave fabric with one continuous cross thread  that is passed back and forth all the way down the length of the bolt.  As the weft loops back into the edge of the denim it creates this “self-edge” or selvedge.

Spring is in the air…. at least there’s a hint of it.  We’ve had a few warmer days of sunshine mixed in with the cold, rainy Northwest weather here at the Agave Design Studio.   We’re ready for a change of seasons, especially since it brings with it a color palette of gorgeous, luscious colors!  Here’s a sneak peek of the colors & inspiration for the Agave Spring 2013 season.   We traveled to the beautiful San Juan Islands right here in Washington, inspired by the variety of Native artwork, sea life , coastal architecture and gardens.  Our new collection is starting to roll into the warehouse, so take a look on our website to see what’s available now.  More to come on inspiration behind the must-have’s of the season….. but we’re loving what’s on it’s way & hope you do too!

Denim is the perfect for any season!

Lauren & I recently attended the LA Textile show, looking for new fabrics, perfect finishing details & general inspiration for the upcoming Agave Fall 2013 season.  Acres of buttons, discovering a vintage textile library & wandering through galleries at Bergamot Station were just a few things we enjoyed.  As if the gorgeous California sunshine & palm trees were inspiration enough.   Stay tuned!  Cheri

As the fall chill works it’s way further into November I can’t help but think about some of my new favorites from our Fall 2012 collection.

First up is the Maverick slim fit, straight leg, button fly  jean – sewn using  denim from Japanese mill Kuroki, a 12oz raw plant indigo selvage denim, 100% cotton, dyed with true raw plant indigo, woven on 29″ vintage American shuttle looms.  These are limited edition jeans and each pair are signed and numbered.

Next up is the  39 North – moleskin ‘jean’ jacket that is 100% cotton with suede collar and quilted lining.
